Kult Revival

Post by Koumei »

Honestly, this belongs on more of a "Roleplaying News That Makes You Etc" thread, but I don't think we have one of those. Anyway, Kult is a... fuck it, it was made in the nineties but that doesn't make it a classic. It's a shitty old dark gritty weird cult horror game.

But it's getting a reboot via Kickstarter. Which mostly means it will be all the more sad if it fails, because if you can't even get a Kickstarter re-release, where does that leave you?

But it gets better, because they decided it needs a new system for this new age, not tied down by the bullshit of the old thinking - and hey, that is very good thinking. The last thing you want to do is ignore ideas from the last twenty years and just reprint the old garbage with stupid tables.

But for this new system, they decided to use Bear World.

I can't wait for this to be awful. A friend who specialises in reviewing those trashy cult games has a special place for hating Kult, and I will make him review this if it comes out.

Not sure what you mean by "if it fails". Kult easily has enough fans in Sweden alone to fund a Kickstarter. And checking the Kickstarter page reveals that with an initial goal of 95 000 kr (~$11 500), they are now up to 1 470 000 kr (~$178 000) with ten days to go.

That's a pretty clever, if unprincipled, way to take money off fanboys. Take something with a fervent following, propose to make a RPG out if it, and adapt it to *world instead.

The amount of work is minimal, you just need to hire some artists and shit out some fluff. Zero game design work actually required.

As much as I hate Bear World, I acknowledge using a system made specifically to disempower players on a horror game is not a terrible idea. It might even work.

Being BearWorld it will have quantum sex moves. You observe spooky action at a distance, but upon approach you collapse the waveform and suddenly have bears in your rectum. Or maybe you have a bear boyfriend. Or hell, maybe you kill a child in your attempt to see people getting it on. Who knows.

I think there is a review of some kind somewhere around here that made it clear the game considers it of vital importance the players know as little about the game as possible.

Bearworld is almost certainly a far better fit for what Kult was conceived to be. Not a good game, but if your game is supposed to have clueless players stumbling about trying to get the PJ to drop them some hints as to what is going on and the true nature of reality, you may as well run bearworld anyway.
