Tone trolling is bad enough but it would be better if your sentence made actual sense. Which it doesn't. "Vitriol FOR a licensing cash grab" would general indicate that I was being critical of the licensing cash grab.Shrapnel wrote:I don't think I've ever seen such... vitriol for a licensing cash grab. Do you need a cold towel?
Which I firmly remind you I am not. It was all in all a pretty good licensing cash grab.
And anyway. What the hell have you suddenly got against licensing cash grabs?

I would not be as generous to Warcraft. I was glazing over in the first 10 minutes as they change locations a brazillion times. All the characters were grating and the acting was half-hearted and wooden. It was pretty but I've already largely forgotten anything about it in the 3 days since I saw it or I'm sure I'd have more to say about it.

So it's a movie and they're all IP-focused cash grabs these days, because capitalism is the only high art and everything else is there to serve it drinks.I don't think I've ever seen such... vitriol for a licensing cash grab.
But also, it was a rant about dumbing things down, in that it tends to make people stupider over time by constantly failing to challenge them, and how the US is quite ... audience-focused in making movies, to ensure no one gets left behind, because capitalism again.
ckafrica, you should try watching movies when you're not hung over, they're better then.

Of course if you couldn't understand that my meaning was that there was little else to say about it because it was such an unmemorable yawn than I doubt that I trying to make my point any more clear will be any less of a waste of time reading any of your posts

Finished reading Hellboy, didn't expect it to end that way but it was cool.
A lot of parts of Hellboy in Hell reminded me of Dark Souls 3 in particular, now there are plenty of overlaps in genre/tone of the two but I wonder if there was any direct influence. Hidetaka Miyazaki is a known Hellboy fan so some similarity is expected, but wonder if Mignola ever played a Souls game, or at least watched a trailer.

I am totally digging Pandemic Legacy right now. The four of us played two games of it without the Legacy rules first, to get an understanding of how the game works on its own, then dove straight in and played January. One of the players was a bit put-out that we didn't mulligan the opening hand, but we still won that month and only ended up with a couple cities with a panic level.
I looked online a tiny bit of others' experience with the game, and I'm not quite certain how people manage to eradicate two diseases in a single playthrough though. All three times, we had to struggle just to keep up with the cures without outbreaks slamming us and only one time out of the three were we good enough to actually eradicate A disease.

So, apparently, a bull gored a bullfighter to death in Spain on live television. And the video is currently up on youtube.
Any death is a tragedy, but the bull's technique is incredibly impressive. The way he charges just slightly past the guy so he can catch his leg with the curve of his horn and flip him onto the ground was awesome, and the follow up coup-de-grace was incredibly smooth.
With that kind of technique, I'd really like to see him compete again.

If I recall correctly they rarely let a bull fight twice.
Firstly because it rarely survives the event in any case as it was already lanced and drugged. But some do rally and recover.
Secondly it learns from it's experience (level up!) and is more dangerous so usually gets retired for future breeding rather than risk a matador against it in the ring.
There has been talk of going with a less lethal bullfighting where they don't put the bull down at the end, but to date that has been voted down.
Edit: The EU has tried to cut farm subsidies for the bullfarms as it does sort of run counter to their whole animal cruelty-free stance. However since Bullfighting is classified as a cultural event they really can not enforce any such changes without rewriting the CAP rules, which is a whole other ballgame.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Went and saw Ghostbusters last night, it was a lot of fun, and now I want a Ghostbusters RPG again.

But are they good and do they support actually mechanically diverse characters?

I didn't really find the new one all that interesting but then again I didn't find any of the GBs after the first to be what I'd call good so I might just be missing something.Prak wrote:Went and saw Ghostbusters last night, it was a lot of fun, and now I want a Ghostbusters RPG again.

I thought it was a lot of fun. There's a contingent online who think that "the evil SJWs got into their favorite thing and ruined their childhoods," because of course there is, but I thought it was a really good update and reboot. Before I saw it, I was of the opinion that they should have made it a sequel rather than a reboot, but having seen it, I'm not sure a sequel would have been superior.
It was funny, the characters (especially Holtzman) were awesome, Patty, in the movie, actually didn't come off as a shitty black woman stereotype as she seemed she would from the trailers, and my biggest gripe was the absolute uselessness of Hemsworth's character. But that was the point, and it was worth a laugh usually.

My impression is the comedy is good, but absolutely nothing at all about the movie benefits in any way from being ghostbusters movie, and in fact, is mildly driven down by it. Obviously that shouldn't be much of a surprise, because all those actresses (and thor) are good actresses (and thor) who have been in good comedies with each other (for the most part).
But yeah, the ghostbusters theme is still really dumb, and in the original I would say it contributed positively, but in this and ghostbusters 2, it was only a drag, so there probably is nothing good about this movie being a ghostbusters movie instead of a [insert some other premise, like wedding or spy thriller].

That's libertarians for you - anarchists who want police protection from their slaves.
To be fair, there are people drawn to it specifically because it was Ghostbusters (like me). If it were a wedding movie with the same cast, I probably wouldn't see it, because the entire institution of marriage can suck it so far as I'm concerned, and if it were a spy thriller... eh, maybe.
So at the very least, it being Ghostbusters contributed an audience.

Paul Feig, the Director, also directed Bridesmaids and Spy, comedies with some overlap in casting with ghostbusters. I wasn't actually advocating that they make those movies, because they already made them, just making the point that we know they can make comedies that are just as good with other concepts, so the ghostbusters concept is certainly not a positive. Whether or not it is better than the third best idea Paul Feig has for a comedy premise, well, it probably is, because Bad Teacher sucked. But still, my point is mostly just that ghostbusters probably doesn't add much to the story.Prak wrote:To be fair, there are people drawn to it specifically because it was Ghostbusters (like me). But yes, the ghostbusters name is to sell tickets, not to improve the movie, that's a premise I can agree is almost certainly true, and does not in any way change the things I said.

I'm amazed by the amount of angry reverence the original ghostbusters seemingly has whipped up among a large "totally don't get us mixed up with the guys who just hate it because of girl cooties" faction.
It was a merely OK fantasy action comedy. It's old. It's dated.
You can generally tell when they're suffering from wildly out of fucking control nostalgia or whatever the fuck is wrong with them when they shit all over Ghostbusters 2, a movie as perfectly adequate as the original, (and aging a little less poorly).
I perfectly understand the offense people have about remakes and reboots being the ONLY thing around, and I understand the issues when the remakes and reboots are just plain shit, but I've never really understood the idea that they shouldn't happen at all or that anything is so sacred no one should never be allowed to call do overs and have a shot at it.
But beyond that. Deciding a lame Bill Murray at his worst and smarmiest vehicle that SOMEHOW everyone else in managed to heroically lift to the standard of "eh, OK" is somehow sacred? Who the fuck makes these decisions? What next? A piece of shit like fucking Caddyshack?

I have not seen the new Ghostbusters, but I am pretty comfortable saying that the trailer made the film look like a pile of ass.
"That's a class 4 apparition." I call your bluff, writer. The words class 4 apparition mean nothing to you. You invented them for this line of dialogue and then promptly forgot about them, and the end result is less believable than "holy shit it's a ghost."
"Holtzmann, you're a brilliant engineer." "Erin, no one's better at quantum physics than you." "You guys are really smart about this science stuff, but I know New York." Show, don't tell. I get that it's a trailer and that puts serious time contraints on your ability to communicate concepts to the viewer, and yet even Paul Blart fucking Mall Cop's trailer has subtler exposition than that. I know, because I watched them both to compare. Fuck you for making me watch the trailer for Paul Blart Mall Cop, Ghostbusters. Fuck you.
And the rest of the trailer is just a glimpse at the film's humor, which was... well, some of it was okay, and some of it was bad, and some of it was worse than bad - it was boring. Also I really can't tell if Patty Tolan is a "loud and obnoxious = funny" character who ended up being played by a black woman or a "black women are loud and obnoxious and that's funny" character. It's worth at least one strike either way, because fuck you those characters aren't actually funny. But hey, McKinnon delivers the shit out of the one whole line she gets in the trailer. I'm still not sure if it was a good line, but she definitely nails it. I'm going to predict that if I ever get around to actually watching Ghostbusters 2016, my conclusion will be that Kate McKinnon could not save Ghostbusters from its own terrible writing. You'd have thought that four years on SNL would have prepared her for exactly such a trial. HA, ZING.
