[3.X] Figurines and Feather Tokens

Post by fbmf »

Other than the Bronze Griffon, are any of the FoWP must-haves?

What about Quaal's Feather Token?

Game On,

The Tree feather token is one of the standard "items of a thousand uses".

The Obsidian Steed figurine has Overland Flight, Plane Shift and Ethereal Jaunt usable at will. I'm guessing that Plane Shift was supposed to be self+rider only, but it doesn't say so.

The Griffon is the best figurine, and the only one in the basic book that is worth the price. There's like a limestone crab in expansion material that gives you a Giant Fucking Crab that pops out with Hardness. It also costs 10k. It was just the beginning though, the Amber Amulets of Game Breaking came later and were practically free.

The Feather Token Tree is incredibly powerful if you're doing classic dungeon crawls, because it is about the only thing that can let you actually escape from enemies in a dungeon environment. In "modern" dungeon crawls it is normal design to not include anything the PCs need to run away from, so it is less imperative than it used to be.

Magic Item Compendium gave us these gems. The one I remember in particular costs something stupid like 700gp and lets you summon a Huge scorpion. Nothing at that level can stand up to that thing.

There was at least one mispriced amulet in the Magic Item Compendium that could turn into a giant vermin of some kind.

It actually first appeared in Magic of Faerun. It was a cheap, limited-use amulet that summoned a gigantic scorpion that destroyed everything forever.

A rather large scorpion, yes. Didn't they errata that one, though? Or am I thinking of something else?

That explains it. Magic of Faerun had a bunch of really cool stuff, but also a bunch of badly broken stuff.

To the best of my knowledge there has not been any errata for the amber amjulets.

To be exact, the list of Amber Amulets of Vermin costing 700 is as follows: giant praying mantis, giant queen ant, Huge monstrous centipede, Huge monstrous scorpion, Large monstrous spider. Giant bee is only 500, Giant wasp costs 800 and giant stag beetle is 1200. Each amulet lets you summon the monster 1/day for 1 minute (for the 700gp ones). So yeah. A CR 7 scorpion is priced the same as CR 2 anything else, and costs just over half of what you pay for a CR 4 beetle.

They did errata the Scorpion to just be Large, not Huge. Still pretty potent at low-levels, but it no longer crushes all enemies with a single claw.

Sharn: City of Towers added one which was a one-use featherfall. Kind of handy.

That is a lot better, but still strong. It does three points of damage less per average, but the biggest differences is a net -10 to grapple, less than half the HP, and a net -5 on attack rolls.

Other than that, at 700 gp, it seems like the group could invest in two to four of these during 2nd level, and just let the scorpions do most of the fighting. Until you run into fliers, it'd be a solid tactic.

I just used the spider one at level 3 in the Pathfailure game, and it was better than the actual party. We weren't shit, but we were level 3 in Pathfailure-Core only. It was a fucking Large Spider. It was awesome.

MC got shitty over this.
