Golems managed to sit exactly in the gateway where they would be least ganged up on and held their ground long after their side had been defeated and our team abandoned the siege and went home when one of the remaining golems had seven hit points. Argh.

What?

I saw a pan spamming petrify, which if I am not mistaken, is an SC counter. With N+E, what else would you have had them cast?

Out of 400 units at the start of the battle, 46 remained on the field by the time you routed. I thought the auto retreat was at 75% casualties. Honestly, I had been expecting a retreat for 5 turns. Hell, at that rate, if you had brought more freespawn you could have killed the golems with the turn limit.

I got a 2h file from everyone, but K's is listed as early_mictlan. Could I get that resent?

Also, I timed my music poorly when looking at my borders. Currently fighting the temptation to make a resolution to name my pretender Dr. Morbis next time I play Mictlan.

Rlyehan Starspawn Priests do not gain insanity for looking into the void. They also have a savingthrow against some of the bad effects that can happen when looking into the void. But the "You gain a buttload of insanity" bad event can still happen. It's only a percentage chance to avoid it.

One way or another, the starspawn priest you set to looking into the void is going to die. You are trading him for some number of zero upkeep sacred monsters.

I know, but it still pisses me off. I even retired that guy because his summoning skill rose too high for vastnesses a while ago.

I think you can still get Things that Should Not Be, and maybe Greater Othernesses. But it is still all down hill from a certain point with the void gate.

Nothing - your chance of getting good stuff goes down, but also chance of getting bad events his almost zero.

Summoning skill? What does that mean?

Essentially, you can summon out of the void gate, and the more successful you are at it, the higher your summoning skill gets. So it represents the chances of getting certain results from the void gate.

If you have a void gate, which is only available with some rare magic sites and the R'lyeh home province, you can set an Astral Mage to go look into it every turn. This makes crazy shit happen sometimes. They can get lost in time and space, they can be driven insane, they can be permanently feebleminded, and they can get attacked by Void Monsters. But you can also get Void Monsters to join you. And every time you successfully pull something out of the Void Gate, you gain a special thing called Summoning Skill. Summoning Skill is a number, and the higher it is the lower your chances of exploding when you look into the Void, and the higher your chances of getting bigger monsters to join you.

There is a sweet spot where Vastnesses can come and join you. A Vastness is basically a Pretender God chassis that moves around at ludicrous speed, has a giant pile of mind blasts, and comes with etherealness and Blood Vengeance. It's very good. If your summoning skill gets "too high", the Vastness falls off the list of things that can show up, and you "only" get Greater Othernesses instead. Greater Othernesses are giant formless things that trample and regenerate.

Okay, in my MA ryleh game, I THINK I will be the first person to artifacts (slow start, but I beelined them), aside from snagging the chalice, is there anything AMAZING that I should get? I have a ring of sorcery, wizardary, a rainbow pretender and good access to everything except fire, where I have no access.

Also, I was thinking it would be bling to make a golem with the sickle of pain who teleported around people's PD and made death gems. Is this a reasonable idea?

Gate Stone. The unique death boosters for denial. Hammer of the Forge lord. Crown of the Ivy King. Soulstone of the Wolves. Dimensional Rod. Gift of Kugri. Horror Harmonica and Carcator the Pocket Lich can make a nasty combination. Ardmon's Soul Trap. Some of the other boosters are worth forging, as are some pieces of gear for your golems. But I think that these are the reasonably big ones.

Sounds like a terribad idea. The Sickle Who's Crop is Pain isn't cheap. Then you will need to fully equip a golem (and golems are fairly expensive in their own right) which will draw teleporting kill teams, or other casters that will exploit its weaknesses.

Golems can teleport themselves home with Returning. So if you teleport them out and murder some province defense, they can't take you down before you take off back home with all your death gems. If you pull it off four times, you'll have way more than payed for your gem outlay. Also you'll have stolen some money and gems from your enemies and accomplished some strategic goals.

The big deal is that you need to bust out a big pile of attack skill bonuses because Golems are Attack 8. Even with a Ring of the Warrior and Boots of Quickness, they only have Attack Skill 16.
