Hey, V:tR has Malkavians, too. And Malkovians. Most likely also malkavian Malkovians.Don Strudel wrote: Malkavians forever!
The problem with this being that once your metaplot has metastasized to a certain point, expansions set in the past of your setting are just as screwed as the original setting.tzor wrote:The original attempt at fixing the probem of an overdeveloped campaign world was to spin off other campaign worlds as game variants. Thus you had Vampire in the Dark Ages and Werewolf in the Wild West.
You are constantly at the risk of stepping on the younger version of a plot-relevant NPC, while playing in a subsetting that is mainly intended to codify even further aspects of the game world and give even more official explanations for every minute detail, propelling the tendencies to treat every sourcebook and every campaign as nothing more than masturbation over the setting's self-referentiality (see : The Dark Eye and, to a lesser extend, the Shadowrun-Earthdawn crossover- at least that had to be abandoned before it was too late).
You are obviously always free to ignore all that crap and to play in your own version of the setting, but a metaplot heavy game will always attract people wanking so excessively to the meta that they'll take every diversion from it, no matter how minor, as a personal offense that's breaking their precious immersion.
Railroading plotwhore GMs are drawn to this stuff like flies are drawn to a steaming pile of shit, and it doesn't take long until every last ounce of creativity is extinguished among the player community.
Which is just one reason (besides goths, obviously) why i always refused to touch oWoD with a ten foot pole.
After all, players here in Germany are notorious for that kind of fanwank in every system they lay their greasy hands on, and every system supporting this kind of behavior is a magnet for our very special version of "that guy".
Hardly surprising that the German translation of nWoD choked right from the start and was abandoned years ago.
Although the publisher blamed some blogger from Berlin for that.
