Perhaps its the rural isolation. But I'm at a complete loss as to what a Hipster is, let alone their pants. I've heard the term but unlike every other subculture stereotype ever I can't for the life of me associate "Hipster" with any form of appearance, item, attitude, or musical preference.
I somewhat suspect they don't exist. Or at least not on this continent outside of Sydney and Melbourne.

Hipsters are yet another subculture that is centered around liking obscure music, but more than that, it's basically liking things specifically because they're obscure, and then instantly not liking them once they're popular.PhoneLobster wrote:Perhaps its the rural isolation. These might help, though.
Basically, they're dumb 20 somethings that make a concerted effort to look like hobos, like music until you've heard of it, and drink shitty beer.
Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

To be fair, emo sort of evolved into Hipster. Also, note that no Hipster self-identifies as such. They claim all those other guys are hipsters. It's great fun going into a place like Hot Topic and asking for hipster clothing - the person behind the counter is paralysed with fear - "Do I help the customer and get a sale, or do I deny being hipster?"

That web site did not help me identify what a hipster is.
I still suspect this sub culture is fictional. The apparent lack of self described individuals makes it even more suspicious.

Okay, I know you're a country bumpkin :3c but if you ever go into the big city, look around for people with hair covering one eye, who spend a lot of money to look poor (faded jeans with holes in them, old faded shirts that "cool people wouldn't be caught dead wearing"), awful beards, thick-rimmed glasses, the jeans seem so tight as to be vacuum-sealed and basically you immediately want to punch them in the face.
[*]Everything they're a fan of is some obscure thing (and it's obscure because it's shit), "you wouldn't have heard of it", and everything else is "too mainstream"
[*]They do things "ironically", without knowing what the word means. Basically they get to wear video game shirts and the like without being laughed at as nerds, because they're doing it ironically
[*]They tend to eat vegan "to be healthy" (read: to be a pain in the ass to cater for) yet still smoke (because it looks cool)
[*]They like "indie" stuff so that no-one else will know about the stuff they like

At Arcanacon I saw some people who I was sure were hipsters. Turns out they were just gay guys, I felt like such a bigot, making that uninformed opinion of them just by their appearance.

OK so I'm in deep rural Novacastria, but what I don't get is that all the OTHER sub cultures, no matter how fringe have all managed to represent out here.
I mean we had actual brand name Emos. THEY were a more viable, widespread and recognizable group. And they were barely distinguishable from Goths.
We had Punks, and Hippies and Skin Heads (actually we seem to be having a rather stubbornly persistent problem still being knee deep in those skin heads), hell my dead grandpa probably traveled five whole yards in his life and he was a god damn Mod (or maybe a Rocker, I dunno).
Generally we get all the major British empire sub cultures and most of the American ones around here, how insular/tiny must this Hipster bunch be that I haven't seen them?
And on another angle. How the hell can someone be a fan of music no one has ever heard of in Australia? The country of JJJ. Being a bleeding edge music fan over here has to put you on a much smaller edge than in other western countries.

1) Hipsters are primarily located in college towns. Are you in a college town?
2) Hipsters are more recent than every other fringe group you mentioned. Maybe in 10 years, you'll have Hipsters in your rural area.

My brain classifies hipsters as the modern equivalent of beatniks, even though there actually was such a thing as hipster.
For some reason, I'm surprised that Wikipedia has a page on them, though I don't know why. I shouldn't be.
Edit: Crap... I didn't notice Koumei already linked it.

We ARE a "college town" (not that you call it that around here, we call "Colleges" "Universities", and due to a ridiculous sense of scale we coincidentally call "Towns" "Cities")
Oddly enough those sub cultures I mentioned like you know, Mods and Rockers, I am somewhat aware are older than yesterday.
But really when I first heard of these various sub cultures... I already knew individuals identifiable as members of those sub cultures.
So now I've heard of Hipsters. But I don't know any. What gives?

Now I don't read German, but note the bike that doesn't work on hills, has no brakes and screams "I don't know how to turn an allen wrench". That's as big a deal as pretending to like PBR.

"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

I would like a bike that's in the STYLE of a retro bike, but I like hand brakes and gears and stuff too much to give that up. (One day, I will have enough money to actually own a bicycle. One of the few things that Broadzilla forbade me to own that I haven't managed to own yet.)
EDIT: on topic though. I could never own a pair of pants like that, I need extra room for the boys and the general when I wear pants.

In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.
Count, I would be shocked if people were regularly telling you you need to be wearing skinny jeans. From what I understand, your upper body is your key asset. I, on the other hand, am exactly the kind of 135-pound twink who is supposed to be wearing these fashions. If I could figure out how to get around the junk problem.

I'm pretty sure that there are skinny jeans with more generously cut crotches if you don't want to show a bulge.Orion wrote:Count, I would be shocked if people were regularly telling you you need to be wearing skinny jeans. With your body type I doubt there's much that would fit well right out of the store; the few brands I know that fit your criteria stop at a 30' waist. Check out some local alteration places and see what they recommend. You might could bring near-fits by and see if they could work with a bit of sewing.
I live in a city waist deep in hipsters. Most of the male ones do actually wear jeans from the women's section.Orion wrote:Do you know where such things are sold? I tried Forever 21 and some similar little stores that cater to the emo crowd, and still didn't find anything that fit my waist outside the women's section.

I have in the past shopped in the womens section for jackets in particular.
I have broad manly man shoulders, but tiny stumpy lady arms. These days I can get some sleeves short enough to be (barely) wearable from mens clothing, but five, ten years ago Australian mens clothing stores seemed to basically assume all males were one foot wide seven foot tall preying mantis hybrids.
All my lady jackets are worn out and gone now. It's sad. They were some of my favorite jackets. A nice slimming waistline on one of them too...

You might have luck at stores catering to skaters. They tend to value roominess in the groin area a bit more.Orion wrote:Do you know where such things are sold?
