The fact that you think using fucking is throwing a tantrum demonstrates what childish sensibilities you have. Protip: Fucking is a word. It is used for emphasis. Do you whine like a little baby when people use the word very?

Actually, I had plenty of useful content in those posts, you can tell because at least two people who don't like me expressed agreement with that content. The difference between them and you is that they can see past the inclusion of the word fucking and read the rest of the post.

See, here you are, still ignoring all the content of my post, because you are too busy insulting me. Why you think your insults are righteous power and mine are evil bad, I don't know. But I'll tell you why I think your's are shit, and mine are perfectly acceptable.

Your insults are you throwing a tantrum about how I'm so mean to you, and then putting me on ignore so you get the last word. You however insult me instead of addressing content.

On the other hand, I told you that you are stupid because I disagreed with your content, then I explained why I disagreed with your content and showed how it was wrong.

So sure, you take that high road, but don't be surprised when everyone else asks why you are walking in a gutter.

Or to put it more succinctly - the mods here are more interested in ensuring people can make themselves clear than in filtering out personal attacks. If your brain is going to shut off the moment someone says a rude word, then go suck your complimentary barrel of cocks.

EGAD! Once again, I'm forced to agree with Kaelik!

But it all seriousness, there are fairly few discussions that don't see some sort of insults.

Another point I must raise is that even so, when someone comes at you calling you a "fucking idiot" or otherwise, you first instinct is to disagree with them whether or not your actually right.

again it boils down to players who need a babysitter rather than a DM that are anti-DMs wanting to play a game that includes a DM, then they proceed to not trust the DM they chose....

disruptive players much? that is the exact type of person that sits and wants to argue all the time, and the dregs of gaming society.

whoever said they wanted to be on a debate team was right, but sadly they don't qualify for be able to do that, so they use gaming as their bitching outlet.

DM guide needs a section to tell players when to shut the fuck up and get the game moving or end it.
Play the game, not the rules.

While I agree that the person who talked about debate teams is not qualified to be one. You should go back and reread.

Seriously shadzar, if you want respect:

1) Use punctuation and capitalization.
2) Read what people actually say.

There is one universal truth that I've finally had to come to terms with; and I think that DSMatticus put it best:

I don't like the comparison, or the chart. You'll notice that in part 2, it basically says that either:

1) You haven't read or thought about the topic.
or
2) You have one little thing to say, and then you are done.

That is just absurd. Having read and thought about something does not make you have less to talk about. And the implication that sticking around and talking about a subject is a bad thing may be fitting for youtube comments or whatever, but certainly doesn't apply to forums.

That part was more tongue-in-cheek than anything. (sorry -- that kind of nuance often gets lost in this medium)
I was simply trying to adjust his perspective. The comparison was more from the perspective of the uninitiated.
(to be fair, I actually did acknowledge that your posts do indeed contain substance)

Not everyone on the Den thinks insults are ok and cool. Insults detract from the message/post, and taint a discussion with bullying antics more at home in a playground.

To clarify things for Cyberzombie: Kaelik is loud and angry, but, in this case, correct. Even if your top priority is keeping the game moving, the DM taking the time to come up with fair and consistent rulings is superior to making individually faster but inconsistent rulings.

If your rulings are consistent, you only need to resolve a case once. After you'd decided how that case will be handled, your players will know what to expect and what to roll in similar situations. They can plan their actions in advance, get their dice ready and announce their decision within seconds of their turn starting.

If your rulings are inconsistent, then the players will not know what you expect them to do. Instead of planning their actions between turns, they'll come up with questions for the DM about what to roll. And only after getting their answers will they decide what action to take. The entire process can make turns drag on for minutes per player, and yet is easily avoidable by having the DM take a few minutes out of the session the first time it comes up in order to explain how those cases will be handled in the future.

Actually, considering that calling someone a poster case for post-term abortion on here is *almost* a term of endearment, you're the one coming into a social setting and trying to impose rules of decorum and acting bewildered when you don't fit in.

To put it much more shortly, welcome to the Den, expecting civility here is like pissing in the wind.

Kuri Näkk wrote:I suppose you have some specific example of GM metagaming in mind. In general, metagaming is not necessarily a bad thing. For instance, trying to maximize fun for the group is sort of metagaming because the overall aim of the game - 'to have fun' - exists outside the game world and should not influence the actions of NPCs from a viewpoint of simulation. So, what kind of GM metagaming would you like to discourage? Any examples?
Sure. A certain degree of metagaming is unavoidable. That's fine. But there are situations where it seems clearly bad for the game. There are many such examples.

Let me choose one you may have experienced: Ever had one of those battles where the NPCs or monsters just happen to know and anticipate all your party's tactics and abilities and weaknesses? Even when they have no in-game justification for this, like a knowledge skill or special intel.

That kind of stuff is horrible.

Many bad DMs will metagame to try and fuck the player over (player illusion spells are frequently targets of DM metagaming, granted the rules for illusion spells are often not good). Some DMs will also metagame to insulate the player from bad things in the game.
Back on topic, in D20 I warn that during combat, tactical discussions are going to be limited to brief exchanges and anything said out loud unless explicitly stated otherwise is going to be said in character in some language everyone understands. That means that intelligent creatures *might* understand what the PCs are shouting at each other and react accordingly. Usually the PCs start out conversing in like draconic or celestial or something like that until they level up, and then I heartily suggest that someone invent a battle language. It only costs a skill point. If you're super paranoid (and at high level you should be), then something like an earring of telepathy becomes a worthy investment, and it becomes a null issue.

But I do intelligence rolls and stuff to see if NPCs pick up on PC tactics. In fact, if I had to put one thing into the DM's guide and nothing else, it's that when dealing with adversaries, treat them as living creatures. Namely, unless they're particularly stupid (and even animals have cunning), they have some level of self-preservation.

That means that if the orcs have a choice, they're going to lay an ambush every single time. Maybe not a *good* one, but if they attack it'll always be in a situation where they think "I probably will survive this".

Yes there are exceptions to the rule, but that should bear the rule out.

The corollary to this is that animals will run away when wounded, intelligent creatures will surrender if they suspect they'll receive mercy, and just about anyone will retreat if they think they will lose. Maybe it's just to rally and attack in a different way, but this idea of being outnumbered and hacked to death and standing to the last man shouldn't be the default AI for your NPCs.

It's interesting that most games I run if an NPC shows self-interest or self-preservation, the players automatically peg those characters as "important" or "memorable" even if they aren't. They help cross the uncanny valley of MMO NPCs with exclamation points over their heads and become characters the players care about.

Small anecdote towards that end: in Dark Heresy I introduced a throwaway character who was a former quartermaster in the Imperial Guard. He was literally a one-scene-character, meant to provide another link in the chain. They came back later during a city riot and I thought it'd be good texture to have him with a bedroll and a bottle of hootch at his landing pad worksite sitting on a crate drinking and watching the city burn, remembering his time in the IG. They asked him why he was there, and he shrugged and said "Too dangerous to go home tonight, so I'll sleep here. I've slept in worse places". The players decided to have the PCs join him, shoot the shit, and watch the riots burn until they simmered down and the PCs could get back on the case. It was this weird lull in the action that served as a wonderful beat.

Because of that one line I tossed out, the players made that NPC one of their favorite characters in the entire game. Not important mind you, but they'd always stop by to see how the guy was doing when the plot allowed and to do what they could to help him along in the world. Eventually they recruited him to much satisfaction among the players. They bonded with him simply because he was smart enough to not go out during a fucking riot.

So think about your NPCs. Even that shitty ass orc in the next room. Yeah he's amped up, but he's also a little weak-kneed because these murder-hobos have killed half his tribe and who the fuck is he to stop them? But fuck it, his buddies are here, he's got a pigsticker, and if he can, he'll kill these pricks and eat them. Treat him with dignity and respect, and your PCs will enjoy killing him all the more.

Wha... just WHY no really stop for FIVE fucking seconds, take a look at what you are doing and ask "WHY AM I DOING THIS?"

Precisely WHAT are you trying to combat by trying to elaborately fuck with the players for daring to openly consider and discus how they go about making tactical plans in a tactical planning game? WHAT is good about charging them a fucking skill tax to permit them to do so? What is good about then subverting even that by allowing NPCs to determine tactics anyway bypassing the bullshit battle language?

And no don't give me shit about "They took too long discussing!" Because that is clearly not actually your agenda here because your apparent solution has nothing the hell to do with that and doesn't help with that in any way.

It's a god damn game let people play it. Metagaming is a major part of gaming and only the stupider edge cases are bad things. Players talking to each other about what they should do in tactical combat is a GOOD THING.

Yeah, Cyberzombie, welcome to the Den. Not that all of us (or maybe even most of us) condone or appreciate Kaelik's often unprovoked personal attacks, but its just part of the territory here. No sense trying to change him (see the quote from DSMatticus above), but there is value in consciously taking a step away from all that, slowing down and figuring out what he's saying, because even though he peppers it all with insults like an inane YouTube commenter, there is usually a good point buried in there somewhere. At least sometimes. He'll try and make it as personal as he can, and I have no idea why, but just learn to not take it personal and welcome to the Den. Here, have a barrel of cocks.

I personally find it more childish to put people on ignore, or even threaten to do so because of something don't like in the discussion.

Cyberzombie seems to be taking it from the wrong perspective, where it's moreso an attack on his ideas, than his person itself. He shouldn't discount what someone says, because it contains some curse words (we're adults here, nothing haven't heard before, get over it), the information they bring to the discussion is what dictates the validity of their message. Not pandering by "playing nice", beating around the bush, say what you want to say, and if insults are slung, ideally done so for actual reason. As it's one thing if someone insults you baselessly, doesn't help discussion at all, but if he provides reasons as to"Why" (which Kaelik did), then it's still moving the discussion forward, and just seem like he showed up to this dishonestly if he's unwilling to hear ideas that disagree with his.

However, I will agree with the notion that Kaelik's posts do come off at times as being rather aggressive. Combined with cursing, can seem like he takes a given response personally, but it's his posting style I guess.

Nobody here is anti-GM. I'm fairly certain that most or all of the people here spend a significant portion of their gaming time behind the screen. I' suspect that a disproportionate number of posters here have participated in games run by demonstrably incredibly bad GMs which has left them with a damaged notion of the correlation of potental for abuse and actual abuse, but that's not the same as being anti-GM.

And frankly, I don't even think there's a lot of those people here anyway. One of the core philosophies of the Den is "A better written and balanced game system is inherently better for the game than a system that is not", and most of the arguments here boil down to disagreements on what constitutes a better written and balanced system, and what the ultimate extent is that a game can be better written and balanced.
Don't bother trying to impress gamers. They're too busy trying to impress you to care.

1) This is true. I spend a lot more time running games than I do playing them.

2) As I mentioned before, Shadzar seriously cannot wrap his head around the idea that player interest and DM interest do not have to run counter to each other. Everything he's said in this thread (and all the others) is some form of strawman where if someone says something "pro player" then they must be definition be "anti DM". He refuses to acknowledge or let go of this strawman. The sooner people stop responding to him to try and convince him otherwise, the sooner I'll stop seeing his posts bleed through in other people's quote tags.

This is about as wrong as you can be.

When the dm says you don't make it to the door, the players calmly explain that he is wrong. If he continues to insist they tell him to roll up a character whle someone else dms the rest of the game, or they tell him to GTFO. Depending on how much they like him.

You are not talking of the same thing, are you?

You do not have to meekly submit to a jackass GM but GM's word IS final in a typical RPG. If you walk to a door and fall to a pit because GM says so then you will not tell him that he is wrong about the pit. You will tell him that he is wrong about not allowing a Reflex save. If the GM claims that this particular pit trap does not allow a Reflex save for reason X then you can argue with him and a good GM will listen. However, if you cannot convince the GM then his interpretation will ultimately prevail. Not because a GM is always right but because there is no way you can effectively overrule a GM without destroying the game he is GMing. That is, you can argue but in the end you either accept GM’s rulings or you tell him to fuck himself and start a new game without him.

I do not disagree with you that if you cannot convince the GM he is wrong, you have reached an impasse (which will often result in the breakdown of the game). Note that this does not mean that 'his interpretation will prevail'...if the entirety of the party disagrees with the GM, and he refuses to alter his ruling, he is essentially shooting his gaming group in the head out of spite.

Can you not see how 'advice' which tells the GM "Your word is final, you are the arbiter in your game" completely encourages the GM to never change his mind or listen to reason, and instead hold the game hostage because "I'm the Boss!"?
I am judging the philosophies and decisions you have presented in this thread. The ones I have seen look bad, and also appear to be the fruit of a poisonous tree that has produced only madness and will continue to produce only madness.
