I personally find the idea of "Mister Cavern" to be a funny, even better reference than GM or DM. I thought most people thought "Mister Cavern" to be an awesome GM name.

Besides, that came from one of the first Hank Frank the Drunken Angry Dwarf Reviews that led directly to the OSSR.

Yeah for you it's cozy familiar nostalgia and "character".

For a new forum member it is stupid gibberish circle jerkery in place of commonly used terms normal people understand for no good reason.

Unfortunately, a lot of the original posts that discuss important Den concepts are not the best choice for introducing people to those concepts, because those posts are often harsh, argumentative, bitter, and insulting. They are also, perhaps not coincidentally, often funny as hell. But I don't think you want to be insulting, harsh, argumentative, or bitter when you're trying to get someone to agree on the ground rules, because I can't think of anything more likely to make the kind of person who'd find this board in the first place snap immediately into devil's advocate contrarian mode. Assuming that they are not actually Satanists, like those 4E guys who invaded a while ago -- whether I am trying to insult 4E by comparing it to Satanism or vice versa I leave to the reader.

So if you want to have some introductions to Den concepts to point new people at, you may want to have them written by someone who is willing to and capable of writing about games without giving the impression that anyone who disagrees with him is both automatically wrong and also a moron. Not to suggest that everyone else here is a frothing lunatic, but how about Josh? He seems like he has both a good understanding of the ideas and a fairly mellow self-presentation. Not that I'd blame him if he didn't feel like putting forth the effort, or you if you wanted someone different.

I'd like to nominate the Balance Points article on dndwiki as required reading for those interested in 3.5, Pathfinder, Tomes, etc. It discusses the power discrepancies of classes without being offensive as far as I can tell.

I have bad news for you: the Den dominant party has a very specific definition of what constitutes good rules based on a strong taste for D&D3e-like gamism, which is used as parameters for measuring up everything. In other words, its like Action-flick fanatics who find Citizen Kane crap cause there isnt enough car chases and boss fights. What this means is that any FAQ or article will tend to fall on the camp of "YOURE PLAYING WRONG AND ARE A STUPID HUMAN BEING !!! TONS OF GRATUITOUS SWEARING !!111!!!!.
Silva: In Forge speak, I would say the following.

I do not believe that rules-heavy systems are inherently gamist or simulationist. Rules-lite games may or may not be inherently narrativist, I don't know, what I do know is that they don't feel like "real RPGs" to me personally, and I'm not interested in them. They're not my cup of tea, as it were. That said, I primarily GM Hero System (5E), D&D (3.5E), and Shadowrun. Much of my audience, and a good portion of myself, are primarily interested in telling and experiencing shared interactive stories (i.e. narrativism). I would describe myself, personally, as 30% Gamist, 50% Simulationist, and 20% Narrativist. Collectively, I'd describe the players I GM for as 80% Narrativist (with one individual exception who also has a strong gamist streak).

For these people that I play with, these "rules-heavy" systems scratch the "narrativist" itch in a very satisfying way. No one is trying to "win", we are playing at telling stories, and we personally find the rules and their application actually helps us to do so.

Keep in mind that what you have pejoratively labeled "action movies" can still have incredibly engaging and emotionally and thematically deep stories. Ask, and I will happily list several cinematic examples, as I am also something of a film buff.

That said, my ability to analyze rules is not limited to rules-heavy systems. I do not at all think all rules-heavy or (and I hate the pejorative connotation of this term) "trad" games have good rules. I do not think that all rules-lite games have bad rules. I think that inelegant and elegant rules and systems can exist regardless of rules weight, and I pride myself on my ability to identify and critique elegant and inelegant rules systems in any milieu, along with many others here on the den.

So in the past, if I have spoken ill of AW, I was simply expressing a personal preference. Not trying to suggest you were having wrongbadfun.

Also, um...tons of gratuitous swearing. One.
Aaaaand another hint of coherence in this place.

Yes my friend, it all boils down to personal preference, as you say. And not only that, but perception too. See, none of the games you cited (Hero, D&D, Shadowrun) seem good vehicles for enticing narrativist agenda for me (and if I was to design a game with such agenda in mind they would be stark examples of what not to do) but if they work for making your narrative juices pumping, who am I to contradict you ? And thats the beauty of the hobby: the same game can mean different things for different people. All this theory talk has its value, sure, specially for putting people on "the same page" about what to play and how, but in the end what determines the value of a game is the perception and tastes of the players. And this, my friend, is totally relative. No matter how many years you spent trying to "fix" Shadowrun, in the end, I still love 2nd edition and its quirkness of variable target numbers and priority-generation and confusing sub-systems of rigging and decking, etc.

And I think some people around here, very intelligent and capable that they are ( like Frank, for eg ) still forget about that. Saying "Amber is broken" or "Pathfinder is broken" by itself dont mean anything. The question should be "Which playstyles or preferences is Amber good for, and which its not good for ?"

And thats what I meant in my previous post that you quoted. Who cares if Shadowrun 2e math is broken, what matters is its other qualities make it worthy it for me. But no, people around here will say that its a broken shitty game in absolute, a piece of trash that has no value whatsoever and its authors must be the kind of shitty-heads who eat shit in the breakfast and drink piss in the lunch ( the Shadzar threads attacking Mearls and Wyatt are at least funny, in a surreal kind of way ), and thats because they analize it according to their own gamist-mechanicist-math-intensive tastes. They dont want to give a sidestep to try and see how other people like their gaming. They dont want to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, all that math is irrelevant to a certain kind of gamer who values more the flavour that arises from the rules, or to the kind of gamer who just wants fast and simple rules to go with their beer and pretzels and friends. Or something like that.

I read silva's post as a perfect example of the touchy-feely, hug-box-y bullshit this place actively tries to avoid. It should go in the FAQ on that basis alone.

Honest question Silva, do you ever encounter something that you enjoyed long ago that turns out to be really disappointing when you look at it now? Or that makes you question why you ever liked something so clearly bad to your present self? Not in a "I know this has flaws but still enjoy it anyway" manner, but in a "I'm embarrassed that I ever liked this, wtf was I thinking" sort of way. Or are you a "once loved, always loved" person?

ubernoob, I would say math is one of the responsible factors for providing flavour to a game, but its far from being the only one.

I will take as example Apocalypse World, a game which oozes flavour for me: the text/way the author communicates oozes flavour, the atributes labels oozes flavour (Hot, Hard, Cool, Sharp, Weird), the directive rules oozes flavor ("Dont pre plots! Play to see what happens!"), the character gear oozes flavor ("Violation Gloves"), the implicit reward cycle oozes flavor (trust in others to improve yourself). Notice I didnt get to its resolution mechanic of rolling 2D6 + atribute (the "math" ). Can you see how it would be perfectly reasonable for a person to like the game for the points cited alone, even if the "math" supposedly had problems ? Got my point ?

I remember examples of "I know this has flaws but still enjoy it" (Shadowrun 2e for example - back there I found it the perfectly game, but today I see it has flaws), but no, I dont have examples of the "Im embarassed I ever liked this" in gaming. I have examples of this for songs/music though. (here in Brazil there is this music style called "Pagode" which I was part of, as a member of a band of the genre. Nowadays I admit being not only ashamed of this past, but also apreciating the musical genre in the first place.. )

Bad example, Apocalypse World can't actually be considered an actual game.

Silva we're making a thread to cure you of some idiocy. Stop vomiting it all over the place.

Here's round 2 of some truth Fectin layed on you.

What a shocker.

Stop flaunting your abject ignorance; evolve a sense of shame; go find something (anything!) to add to the discussion; and come back more of an adult, and less of a disingenuous twat.
You wanna keep spouting the same valueless, discounted ideas we've run through with a thousand assholes before you do it in another fucking thread. Or better yet go read something. Any-fucking-thing on game design and then come back to lecture us when you have more than the 2 tired, lengthily rebutted arguments you have.

Oh sure, because people with different tastes and preferences from yours have some kind of idiocy sickness.

Thanks for proving my point. (again)
The traditional playstyle is, above all else, the style of playing all games the same way, supported by the ambiguity and lack of procedure in the traditional game text. - Eero Tuovinen

Yes, if you have car with a very nice exterior and a terribly built engine people can still love the car. The thing is that if someone points out that the engine isn't good as well as why it isn't good by showing it is not producing the results that the manufacture said it should saying the "car looks nice" makes you look like an idiot. Then as in your case the near constant mentioning of *World as though it is something to be revered multiples the perceived idiocy/willful ignorance even more.

Sure, you have a problem of dishonest advertising there. I think its only fair to keep things clear upfront to the players/clients.
Then as in your case the near constant mentioning of *World as though it is something to be revered multiples the perceived idiocy/willful ignorance even more.
But it is something to be revered to the players and groups that cater to the game promoted playstyle - its not my problem that people around decided to elect one playstyle as the "One True Way" and measure everything else through it. What you expect me to say ? My condolences ?

My analogy was suppose to illustrate that mechanics are suppose to support the play-style shown by the fluff/flavor.

I have one question... What is this "One true way" that you keep spouting? It seems to me that it's just short hand for " you don't agree with me".

I agree with what deanruel87 said, and thusly I wonder, how would us all wanting people to be informed (some of which should be "common knowledge after a decade++) create an "echo chamber"?

That's like being offended for somebody else.

When I first jointed up I had no idea what MC stood for precisely, but could tell from context that it was (yet another) stand in for DM. Later I became curious enough to dig around and find out what it meant (relative to this community) and ended up finding out it was funny.

It's a 'regional' nickname, nothing more really. And at least some of us use it because it's amusing, if not out of habit by now.

Its not that confusing really, context makes it pretty obvious. I mean, I grew up with GM, not DM, because I never really played DnD and it still obvious. If you started saying "marshall" or "aedial" then you'd need to start explaining and quite frankly, if you are using the latter than you have a lot of explaining to do.

And I agreed with you. So much so that I acknowledged that Shadowrun has problems (ie: in the fluff action is fast and furious, but in-game it runs slow as a turtle, with all those initative passes, action declarations, etc. )
What is this "One true way" that you keep spouting? It seems to me that it's just short hand for " you don't agree with me".
Its a mix of late-80s high mechanicism (Vampire, Shadowrun, Gurps) and late-90s gamism epythomized by 3e (the anal-obsession for ultra-balanced-encounters-and-classes-and-everything ). Add a little dose of "anti-MTP" rage to the concoction and voilá! ( its as valid a preference as any other, mind you, the error is in judging all other games by this angle )
