Dungeons are much safer than wilderness encounters, for this exact reason. Feels wonderfully old school.

Yeah... I didn't expect this to end any other way. :(

Time to roll another grunt. I think I'll go for straight up fighter this time around, if there are no objections...?

None at all. Sad to see you go but interested to know what you come back as.

I'm intrigued as to what the introduction of the second wave of characters will be. Also to AH since I don't have any abilities just assume I keep pumping out ammo until the bear dies or I do.

Yep. pew-pew for 1d4 damage... if I hit.

Under normal circumstances, any beast would have failed a morale roll and run away by now. Owlbears are never normal circumstances, nor do they make morale rolls.

Yeah the only one of us that has an choosable ability is Tim. The rest of us can just fire while Tim has fire or his one magic missile per day.

And dont worry Ogre. We'll let your new character kill it.

You're allowed to think outside the box. Is Betsy going to do anything besides scream?

It is with great sadness we move Betsy to the Roll of the Fallen. Roll up your next character!

Okay, that was a bit of a slaughter. The survivors each get 105 XP - split between multiple classes in Gilles' case - and if any of you get a bonus for high primary attribute, apply it now (i.e. if Tim the Wizard has an Intelligence of 16 or higher, he gets a 10% bonus, and would write down 105 x 1.1 = 116 XP on his character sheet.)

The bodies of the fallen may be looted.

New characters may be introduced immediately; the king's diviners have foreseen disaster, and he has sent along reinforcements with letters of introduction. If you want to use the same character with a different name ("Betsy II" or "Sir Maximus, brother of Sir Spastus"), that's okay too.

Lol, that thing dropped 3 of us for 100xp. If we kill 19 more we'll hit level 2. Though we might get a bit more, if Table 34 from the DMG is in effect I net another 50xp from killing a 5hd monster, Xaxus gets another 100 from casting his fear power and potentially another 100 from casting bless in order to assist in the murder of living things.

Looting the bodies gives us lots of adventuring gear, a rapier, some shortswords, a longsword, 4 knives, one dagger, and 6.5 gold pieces. I'd like Sir Spastis' longsword in case I ever get disarmed and would be pleased to take the dagger and knives if no one had any value for them. We'll load the rest of the adventuring gear onto the wagons and maybe sell that stuff if we live.

I think we should search for the Owlbears lair because I want it's treasure real bad. Does anyone know exactly how the XP for treasure rules work? Do you just get 1xp for every gp your treasure split is worth when you get treasure?

That's an optional rule. You do not get XP for treasure in this game. So sorry.

Well, it's better than nothing. And we all learned that owlbears are scary motherfuckers. Do I round down or round up fractional XP? (105/2 is 52.5)

Also, I wish I had prepared detect magic today, as I suspect the ring and the sword are magic items.

Pft, Lady Pemberton-Tambling would not be so gauche as to name anyone "Betsy II".

Rolling 3d6 in order again:
Str 12
Dex 8
Con 10
Int 9
Wis 13
Cha 14

Once again locked out of Dwarf, as well as Paladin, Ranger, Specialist Wizard, Druid, Thief, and Bard. Which leaves Fighter/Mage/Cleric either separately or in combination. And why not in combination? Which means Half-Elf for race.

I'll roll HP for now and figure out the rest later.
1d4: 2
1d8: 4
1d10: 1

So, 7/3 = 2 hp. Not quite what I was hoping for. Oh well, better than another 1.

The new characters will enter with the average party xp of 105 xp, correct? (or slightly more if anyone has PR bonuses, I didn't check).

Yes, go ahead and round up.

So either we stick around for another night to let the magicians refresh their spells and detect our new items or we plunge into the dungeon now. I vote we wait till morning, wait for the new people, and wait out that gnome, see what happens.

Not true. I hit level 2 after 14 more Owlbears.
Though we might get a bit more, if Table 34 from the DMG is in effect I net another 50xp from killing a 5hd monster, Xaxus gets another 100 from casting his fear power and potentially another 100 from casting bless in order to assist in the murder of living things.
Actually, all those were spells, and as much as I want a cool 300xp more than everybody else, I can totally see why Ancient History isn't doing that: thats totes fo' realz not fair. It turns out though that I am totally for things that are unfair in my favor, especially since I don't get the bonus 10% xp for winning the ability score lottery, even though +300xp is just a teeny bit more than the +10.5xp they would get.
Looting the bodies gives us lots of adventuring gear, a rapier, some shortswords, a longsword, 4 knives, one dagger, and 6.5 gold pieces. Bro, I literarily do not give a single fuck about any of that stuff, I will not contest any of that. I admonish that (should the party last long enough) we should give whatever to whoever could use it best, and that the party as a whole buys stuff for characters who need stuff.

That short sword might be masterwork as well as magic. Masterwork weapons get a +1 to attack rolls only, but every +1 counts.
I think we should search for the Owlbears lair because I want it's treasure real bad.
Although Xaxus is down for whatever (excluding that whatever those beer adverts are about), we should get some XPs in the dungeon first, honestly for no other reason than there are "Oh fuck, Owlbears" on that random encounter table. Although I don't see how we are going to get any levels without XP from treasure and individual awards. It took us a week to have one encounter that got us 105/115.5xp and killed nearly half the party; This does not project a good Level Gain or PC Death ratio over time.

Image
"The percentage the party of killed and the total XP acquired to level up over time."

ON WHAT TO DO NEXT: I personally vote to secure the dungeon entrance and camp inside to regain spells before we delve deeper.

We're doing gold=EXP too right? I think that's more fun as we'll be goal oriented with hauling off treasure instead of walking in a circle for random encounters.

And in honor of our first kill(and killeds), have some owlbears:

Tim prepared read magic, he reasoned that if all these guys couldn't put out enough kill to take care of something, one magic missile wouldn't help much.
If your religion is worth killing for, please start with yourself.

I have modified the random encounter table.

It is supposed to be a short, low-level adventure, not "The Dungeon of 1,001 Orcs."
We're doing gold=EXP too right?
No, we're not doing gold = XP. And your goal already is to haul off treasure.

Out of the survivors, the shortsword is probably best for Gilles, as he's proficient in it and gets a bonus to attack with it for being an Elf (Atani would get just as much out of it, but he's specialized in Longswords so he does better using one of those.)

One of the new PCs might do better with it though. And, of course, this is assuming the item isn't cursed.
