Gilles lets loose 2 more shots from his short bow (THAC0 17). Gilles decides not to fire, lest he hit Atani. He doesn't want to draw the shortsword or put on the ring until he knows what their magic properties are (and makes a mental note to ask Tim to identify them.)

Xaxus moves up to Atani and tries to use his healing proficiency to restore 1d3 hp. Xaxus will attempt to Command Undead in the next round should he and the monster live to see it.

Gilles will try a healing check on Atani. Whether or not Xaxus still wants to try one as well (if we both pass it's guaranteed that we restore Atani to full, and it's not guaranteed either one of us will pass the check) is up to him.

Blade and bludgeon fall upon the skeletal form, but though its rotten clothing disintegrates into foul tatters, the bones beneath it seem unperturbed by the blows, and the foul creature rakes its hard nails across the face of Dorgan (-3 hp).

Standing behind the others, the mighty magus Tim recites a few syllables of arcane power, and with a curious gesture lets loose a magic missile! The unerring bolt strikes in the undead thing's forehead, shattering bone and atomizing petrified brains, but the creature still moves.

Gilles (who has the initiative) rubs some ointment made of boiled cow urine into the scratches on Atani's face (2 hp restored).

Huecuva Surak says, still watching the fight from atop the stately marble casket. You can tell because it's immune to most things except silver, magic, and fire. Haven't seen one of those in a century.

Atani will toss one blade aside before reaching behind him into Gilles' belt loop, pulling the shortsword free. He will then make his next rounds 3 attacks as 2 shortsword attacks with his longsword attack sacrificed for a parry attempt.

Dorgan, realizing there is little he can do on his own to hurt this creature, withdraws a few steps.

"We need fire! Someone pass me a burning torch to light this sucker up!" He turns to Gilles. "You! Priest! Get me some of that wondrous salve of yours, willya?"

Flintbeard splashes the thing with a vial of flammable oil. If nobody else does it he will then hit it with a torch.

Atani, with flintbeard, will move to cover Dorgans withdrawal. Dorgan can now move 30ft away with no fear that the creature will follow if he'd like to do so this round

As Atani draws the short sword, he notes that the Gnomish runes seem to glitter, and leave a trail like falling stars as it slices through the air - it cleaves the bones of the heucuva like old dry kindling, and after he has completed two passes the skeletal creature has collapsed in on itself, the dreadful howl fading to the memory of an echo...

Gilles applies his cow-ointment to Dorgan's face, resorting to fishhook and thread for a particularly ragged and deep cut, which is sure to leave a rakish scar. (Dorgan heals 2 hp) However, the priest is unable to clear some of the fingernail fragments from the wound, and is afraid that the dwarf is now diseased, and requires healing magic...

"There is no curse to fear, you possess a powerful weapon" Atani says, flipping the blade back into Gilles' hands. "If you would check my wound for the same infection I will lead the way down the hall the creature came from. If it guarded any valuables they are now free, and Dorgan you may have my share if there is enough there to buy yourself the divine magics you need"

"Excellent," Gilles remarks, quickly looking the blade over before tucking it back into his belt. Before he examines it further he checks Atani for any signs of a disease (Healing check again).

Flintbeard peers into the ruins of the once-trapped door. Holding the torch back so it's light can shine ahead of him, he sees a short corridor - perhaps ten feet long - which ends at a T-junction. There is a hollow in the wall there shaped like a casket set upright. There is a glint of gold at the base of this hollow, and strewn on the floor a long-handled warhammer.

Atani negotiates the skull-faced ring off of Gilles.
"You only live once, and briefly doing what we do yeah?"
A reckless look crosses his face as he walks towards the casket room, popping on the ring as he goes. He holds the rope of the leaden weight swinging in front of him like the leash of a beloved dog. When he reaches the room he'll let it trail over the floor before he investigates.

Atani chuckles as he gets to the casket, saying over his shoulder "It just occurs to me I'm looking the proof against that little proverb right in the face! Flintbeard come search this, it deserves the eyes of someone who's learned how to actually do this job!"

Atani's ball and chain/rope does not trigger any traps. At the t-junction, he sees to the left (south) the hallway extends for five feet and ends at another door; to the right, it continues on into darkness.

**Does anyone feel like rifling through the redead skeleton's pockets too while Flintbeard is going about his business? If not flintbeard will poke at the remains with a pole.

If Flintbeard doesn't detect any traps, Gilles will double-check (40% chance). He will also make a Religion check on the coffin (after checking for traps, and Flintbeard has done his thing there).

EDIT: He'll make the check unless either he or Flintbeard detect traps in the coffin, in which case Gilles will give it a wide berth.

The hallway is cold. There is no sign of light or heat.

Flintbeard detects no traps. Gilles also detects no traps.

The disturbances in the dust and bits of rotten cloth and leather do suggest that that the heucuva stumbled out of casket. In any event, the hollow is plainly of more recent and inferior workmanship to the rest of the walls, though still centuries old. Obviously a modification to the original design.

In the coffin, Flintbeard finds the remains of ancient cloth - perhaps the burial shroud of the creature, or else bits of its clothes that had fallen off. There are few grave-goods, save a curious gold amulet - a disc with the leering face of a demon on one side, and a complicated geometric diagram on the other - and a pouch with five sea-pearls of some value.

The hammer is long-handled warhammer of cold-wrought iron, but finely made. There is a name inscribed along the hilt in dwarf runes - KOTSCHIE. A strange name, for a dwarf.

Gilles will also make a Religion check on the coffin

Gilles recalls that in many mortuary cults, sub-priests were set as guardians at crossroads to defend against interlopers. Mostly this was superstitious nonsense, but with the right necromancy...
