[Spheres] Storm, Forest and Beast

Post by God_of_Awesome »

These are spheres for my idea of a Druid class, accessing these following. Each of them has a mechanical theme. Storm is heavily blaster do damage type. Throw crap to do bludgeoning damage and lots of sonic and electric dealers too. Forest is a buffer type. It concentrates heavy on buffing and healing team mates as well as debuffing enemies. Beast is all up in your melee type. Like Plant it buffs but only with Self as target.
Storm
1. Bigby's Lifting Hand*: A better version of Mage's Hand. Lift and throw big things.
2. Bigby's Lesser Forceful Hand*: And a nerfed, level appropiate version of Forceful Hand.
3. Shout
4. Shriek*: Like Shout but AoE.
5. Lightning Rod*: Like Lightning but except it just does 1d6 electric damage. On the plus, it denies Reflex saves and continues damaging and stunning for round/level.
6. Chain Lightning
7. Bigby's Forceful Hand
8. Bigby's Lifting Crushing Hand*: Like Lifting Hand except with the Crushing Hand spell added on.
9. Bigby's Thunder Hand*: Like Lifting Crushing Hand but with electric damage too.
10. Thunder Boom*: Like Shriek but more dramatic and with electric damage too.

Forest
Note: All of these spells are based on pollen and breathing it in so any effect that would blow away pollen or prevent you from breathing it in effectively dispells it.
1. Bull's Strength
2. Entangle
3. Mass Owl's Wisdom
4. Confusion
5. Remove Disease
6. Mass Cure Light Wounds
7. Slow, Greater*: Like Slow but with great affects and AoE range.
8. Haste, Greater*: Like Haste but...
9. Mass Cure Serious Wounds
10. Animate Plant

Beast
Note: The spells can only be casted on target: Self.
1. Owl's Wisdom
2. Jump
3. Cat's Grace
4. Haste
5. Bear's Endurance
6. Darkvision
7. Bull's Strength
8. Levitate
9. Polymorph*: The Tome version plox.
10. Overland Flight

Accepting Criticism.

No... just, no.

Firstly, Spheres work on this rubric with few exceptions*:
  • Sphere Name and Theme (Storms)
    Character levelAbility gained
1 Special Ability relating to the Sphere (like: you ignore any penalty due to high winds)
level 1 SLA (cone of cold*)
3level 2 SLA (gust of wind)
    5Level 3 SLA (wind wall)
    7Level 4 SLA (solid fog)
    9Level 5 SLA (control winds)
    11Level 6 SLA (chain lightning)
    13Level 7 SLA (control weather)
    15Level 8 SLA (whirlwind)
17Level 9 SLA (storm or vengeance)
    19Level 9 SLA (reality maelstrom)

*Some spells auto-scale in a level appropriate manner from level 1 till forever. Spells like fireball, cone of cold, lighting bolt, and greater dispel magic always scale with level, and can be handed out at first level where nobody cares if once per day someone inflicts 3.5/1.75 damage on a failed/made save when the Greataxe wielding Orc does ~9.5 with every successful attack.

I'll see if I can help you out with a Forrest and Beast sphere.

There you are. Need to know where a spell is? check this out.

Forrest
Special: You may speak with plants at will, and you may move through any sort of undergrowth (such as natural thorns, briars, overgrown areas, and similar terrain) at your normal speed and without taking damage or suffering any other impairment. However, thorns, briars, and overgrown areas that have been magically manipulated to impede motion still affect you.
  • 1: entangle
    3: barkskin
    5: plant growth
    7: blight
    9: wall of thorns
    11: transport via plants
    13: animate plants
    15: control plants
    17: unyielding roots
    19: shadow landscape
Beast
Special: You may speak with animals at will. Once per day, you may increase the duration of a single casting of summon animal to 24 hours.
  • 1: summon animal*
    3: spider climb
    5: dominate animal
    7: giant vermin
    9: animal growth
    11: antilife shell
    13: animal shapes
    15: antipathy
    17: sympathy
    19: shapechange (Animals only)
*This spell works exactly like the summon nature's ally line of spells, except it has a duration of 1 minute/level and can summon a single creature with the animal type or any number of creatures with the animal type whose combined Challenge Rating equal to your level - 2; at first level you can summon an Animal or any combination of Animals equal to a CR 1/3, and at second level you can summon an Animal or any combination of Animals equal to a CR 1/2, at third level the combined total is CR 1, and at forth level the combined total CR is 2 and so on to a maximum total CR of 18 at twentieth level. Casting this spell unsummons any animals from a previous casting of this spell.

I was going for a certain mechanical feel. I had no idea about that rubric though. It does ruin what I had in mind for that spheres.

No it does not ruin the feel if you want to go for a different mechanic. However, I would advise you call your mechanic something other than "sphere", something like "devotion", "path", or "way" to differentiate you mechanic from the preexisting "sphere" mechanic.

OR you could ignore all that and just not use the "sphere" mechanic proposed in the Tomes and relpace it with your own "sphere" mechanic; of course, if you do that you have to do something about how the True Fiend, Condouit, Spherelock, and other community designed classes and prestiege classes use the old mechanic.

OR you could pull a 4th edition and have compleatly different mechanical effects named the same thing (I'm looking at you, "Evil Eye"). You just have to come to terms with yourself that doing so is disingenuous and activly obfuscates critical information that PCs need to successfully operate in a shared reality that uses specific and defined words to convey meaning. But if that is cool for you then you're golden.

Path works.

But I've thinking on it and I think I may just have to rework my Druid rework.
