Votes registered; Lone Wolf will reject the invitation and press on towards Ruanon instead.

247

Your rangers appear to be disappointed by your decision, but you are their commanding officer and they are elite soldiers of Sommerlund. They neither argue nor grumble as they follow you southward.
Darkness soon engulfs the highway and you are forced to stop and set up camp by the roadside. The rangers gather firewood and a guard is posted on the horses. You are hungry and must now eat a Meal or lose 3 ENDURANCE points.
The night passes without incident and at dawn you break camp and continue along this bleak highway known as ‘Raider’s Road’.
Pick a number from the Random Number Table.
If the number that you have picked is 4 or lower, turn to 171.
If it is 5 or higher, turn to 25.

Lone Wolf is able to use Hunting, so he will not need to eat a Meal. Rolling the die yielded a 2.

171

Mile after mile, you ride across the flat and desolate landscape surrounding the Ruanon Pike. This area south of the Pass of Moytura on the fringes of the Wildlands is devoid of healthy flora and fauna and therefore you will be unable to use the Kai Discipline of Hunting to fulfill any Meal requirements while you are in this region.
Despite the bleak and uninspiring surroundings they now find themselves in, your rangers seem to be in fine spirits. They sing rousing marching songs to relieve the tedium of the journey and help to allay their nagging fears of what may lie ahead. During the afternoon, storm clouds gather above the peaks of the Durncrag Mountains to the west and the roll of distant thunder warns of imminent rain.
It is late afternoon when your scouts sight a coaching tavern on the highway ahead. It is a large stone building that has been extensively fortified.

Image

If you wish to stop at the tavern for the night, turn to 63.
If you decide to brave a possible storm and continue to ride south, turn to 141.

Please make your votes on whether to rest at the tavern or press on again before 9:00 AM PDT to guarantee that they will be counted.

Sure, let's not try to ride all night through a storm. Stop at the tavern.

We already disappointed the men once with the minstrel, so stay for shelter from the rain to regain some morale.

Votes registered; stopping at the tavern for the night.

63

The doleful sound of a tolling bell drifts across the barren landscape. Window shutters slam down, but eyes still peer at you from the arrow slits carved into the walls of the fortified tavern. You draw your company to a halt outside the building’s twin front doors.
‘We are Sommlending. We seek shelter for the night and fodder for our mounts,’ you shout, in an authoritative tone. There is a long pause before a voice answers your call.
Pick a number from the Random Number Table to discover the nature of the reply.
If the number you have picked is 0-4, turn to 259.
If the number is 5-9, turn to 95.

Rolling the die yielded a 0.

259

‘Go away!’ shouts a nervous voice.
‘We’re a tavern, not a barracks!’ shouts another.
You try to reason with them but they are adamant; they will not let you enter. You have no choice but to continue along the highway.
     Turn to 141.

141

You have not ridden far when a storm cloud breaks directly overhead and torrential rain crashes down. Within minutes, the dry and dusty highway is transformed into a quagmire of cloying mud. It will be impossible to set up camp in this storm, so you resolve to continue to ride all night in the hope that the storm will eventually pass.
During your night ride you must eat a Meal or lose 3 ENDURANCE points.
By morning the rain has ceased, but you and your rangers are now very tired from the night’s ordeal.
You are about to order your soldiers to make camp when a scout gallops towards you from the east. He points to a line of horsemen on the horizon.
     ‘Bandits!’ he cries.
You estimate that there are at least two hundred of them and they are riding in your direction.
If you have reached the Kai rank of Journeyman/Warmarn (if you possess 8 Kai Disciplines), turn to 72.
If you have yet to reach this level of Kai training, turn to 135.

Lone Wolf has reached the Kai rank of Journeyman/Warmarn.

72

The flat Wildlands offer no cover in which to hide from the bandit horde. You know that if you are to avoid combat with an enemy that vastly outnumbers you, you will have to split up your company and then try to outrun them.
You detach a troop of ten rangers to follow you, and you send the remainder off towards the west in the hope that they may lure the bandits away to the Durncrag Mountains.
With one last glance at the enemy, you lead your chosen rangers on a deadly race along the Ruanon Pike.
     To continue, turn to 211.

211

Your tactics have worked. The bandits ignore your small group of riders and pursue the others away towards the west. You are confident that once they reach the wooded foothills of the Durncrag Mountains, your rangers will have no difficulty evading the enemy among the densely packed firs.
When the bandits have completely disappeared from view, you call a halt and allow your rangers to rest. Despite having now lost many of their comrades, they are still eager to continue the mission.
Pick a number from the Random Number Table.
If the number you have picked is 4 or lower, turn to 51.
If it is 5 or higher, turn to 120.

Rolling the die yielded a 9.

120

After riding for several uneventful hours, at length you reach a highway junction. A large signpost indicates two destinations: south to Ruanon (60 miles) and east to Eshnar (40 miles).
You have now reached a location where the Kai Discipline of Hunting can be used once again to fulfill a Meal requirement.
If you choose to continue south, turn to 33.
If you decide to go east, turn to 92.

To recap: Lone Wolf is refused entry to the tavern and instead is forced to ride through the storm all night and eat a Meal to keep his strength up. He runs into a bandit army and decides to split up his company of rangers to avoid getting massacred. Then, Lone Wolf reaches a junction that offers him the choice of heading to Ruanon or Eshnar. Please make your votes on which town to head to before 9:00 AM PDT to guarantee that they will be counted.

Votes registered; heading south towards Ruanon.

33

It is almost dark when you reach the edge of a densely forested valley. You can just make out the highway disappearing into the trees ahead and a signpost that is pointing towards the south. According to the sign, you are now only forty miles from Ruanon. Your troops are tired and in need of food and rest.
If you wish to set up camp for the night at the edge of the forest, turn to 74.
If you decide to detail some rangers to go and scout the valley for bandits, turn to 139.
If you choose to go without food and sleep, you can press on along the highway and try to reach Ruanon as quickly as possible. Turn to 251.

Please make your votes on whether to have the rangers rest, do recon, or keep going before 9:00 AM PDT to guarantee that they will be counted.

Set up camp for the night. Just because we're personally superhuman doesn't mean we should run our people into the ground.

Votes acknowledged; Lone Wolf will set up camp for the night at the edge of the forest.

74

The night passes without incident, and you awaken refreshed by your sleep (restore 1 ENDURANCE point). After breaking camp, you enter the forested valley. Your warrior instincts warn you that the highway would be the ideal place for an ambush, for the densely packed trees which line the roadside could easily conceal an attacker. As a precaution against such a surprise attack, you send three of your rangers on ahead with orders to report back if they should sight anything at all unusual.
After traveling some distance, you come across the wreck of a burnt-out wagon abandoned at the side of the road. Behind it, a track disappears eastwards up into the hills. There is no sign of your scouts and this raises your suspicions. They should have returned to report this abandoned wreck.
If you wish to search the wrecked wagon, turn to 38.
If you choose to ignore the wagon and continue along the highway, turn to 175.
If you decide to investigate the track leading eastwards into the hills, turn to 293.

Please make your votes on whether to satisfy Lone Wolf’s curiosity, press forward, or succumb to fascism before 9:00 AM PDT to guarantee that they will be counted.

If the scouts should have reported back and didn't, chances are something happened here to stop them from doing so. And if they're still alive, they're more likely to have fled off the highway. Follow the track east.

Votes counted; satisfying Lone Wolf’s curiosity won over succumbing to fascism by a 2-1 vote.

38

No cargo remains intact inside the charred shell of the wagon. The wood is pitch black, and all its metal fittings have buckled and blistered in the heat. However, in spite of the damage, you find enough proof among the ashes to confirm your suspicions. This is the wreck of a Sommlending cavalry wagon, one of three that left for Ruanon with Captain D’Val’s troop over a month ago.
As you stand in the ruins of the wagon, brushing the ash from your hands, one of your rangers suddenly cries out in pain. You look up just in time to see them falling from their horse. There is a disc of sharp steel embedded deeply in their chest.
‘Ambush! Take cover!’ you shout, as more of the deadly discs whistle out of the trees to claim their victims.
Frightened horses gallop in all directions, with your soldiers clinging desperately to their reins. The hidden attackers vanish just as swiftly as they appeared, but not before three of your troops are left dead upon the highway.
After burying your dead, you must make a difficult decision. Only four rangers now remain at your side, and the shadowy enemy could return at any time to finish their evil handiwork.
If you decide to continue along the highway, riding full speed for Ruanon, turn to 297.
If you decide to avoid the main highway for fear of running straight into another ambush, you can continue by way of the eastern track (turn to 15).

Please make your votes on which way to go before 9:00 AM PDT to guarantee that they will be counted.

Votes registered; Lone Wolf will avoid the main highway in favor of going the fascist direction.

15

You have not ridden very far before you notice fresh hoofprints in the dust of the winding track.
If you have the Kai Discipline of Tracking, turn to 264.
If you do not possess this skill, turn instead to 134.

Lone Wolf has the Kai Discipline of Tracking.

264

Your Kai sense enables you to identify the hoofprints disappearing along the path towards the east as those made by a Sommlending cavalry horse.
If you wish to follow the prints, turn to 134.
If you wish to head in the opposite direction to the tracks, turn to 191.

Please make your votes on whether to move towards or away from the prints before 9:00 AM PDT to guarantee that they will be counted.

Votes registered; following the prints.

Soon you arrive at the entrance to a mine. Two sets of footprints disappear into the gloom of the tunnel and, judging by their shape and size, they were made by two of your missing scouts. You shout into the mine but there is no reply, except the echo of your call.
If you choose to enter the mine, turn to 91.
If you decide to call off your search, you can return along the hill track by turning to 191.

Please make your votes on whether to go into the mine or not before 9:00 AM PDT to guarantee that they will be counted.
