We need to see things in context rather than on E6 or NEXT terms. We're talking about a world with a culture of wandering murderhobos that come and go like plagues of locusts (and happen to be just as unstoppable). Murderhobos in d&d land are a marauding de-facto Fifth Estate. Kings and nobles a...

My two cents:

Any "Roleplay-derived" XP in DnD that isn't given in terms of fractions of a level (i.e one tenth, one fifth, etc.) is a waste of time doomed to irrelevance beyond level 1.

GUMSHOE uses a numerically simpler version that uses 1d6 (in addition of being the original system), but then the game wouldn't have been DnD enough without a d20.

Basically, Numenera was what Monty wanted for NEXT and was denied by Mearls. The game has DnD written all over it. The game is a zero-to-hero about post-apocalyptic murderhobos who delve in Panzer Dragoon-land dungeons and stab mutants for their non-magical-magic items. The system is a variation of ...

Because of Edison, we didn't have free Telepower for everyone. Steve Jobs stole all the GNU code used in OS-X and spent his last years trying to destroy Android. Bill Gates stole Windows from Steve Jobs. So yeah, I can't say I'm suprised to hear Gygax was no saint, but indeed I had no idea he was a ...

The Smurfs are communists.

Blue Rose's happy land reigned by a magical stag that automagically detects corrupt public servants and replaces them is reasonably communist.

If you're going to positively play that game, my only tip is to avoid phisical disciplines like the plague. All clans have a mental discipline each, that's where the win buttons are. And yes, Predator Taint is stupid and guaranteed to kill any game as soon as more than 5 vampires get together in the...

So, why were we having the Jem discussion again? And why did it drag for so long? Since the table agreed to play Shadowrun, they all implicitly agreed to play cyber murderhobos 20 Minutes Into the Future. If a player comes up and tells me he wants to play Jem then the first thing I'll ask myself is ...

Both can be done poorly and both can be done well and they both require a different set of expectations. Oh indeed, both can be done either poorly or right, the only difference is that it takes considerably less skill to do a decent dungeon crawl than a decent sandbox, just like it takes less skill...

Re: The inevitable 'get a wish from jerkface genies' thread.

1.) Most importantly, is there any way to avoid the whole 'oh, in some ancient language in another dimensional timeline, your wish really means this' problem? If there isn't, then assume that there's some unbreakable law that makes this so. Sadly, that one is nothing but mythologically accurate (at...

If you're thinking on Patofaindukidoji, well, the only way this one could be any more blatant would be with the cheesecake on the cover wearing a shibari.

My prediction is that rape and bestiality increase in RPGs is going to be zero because HBO doesn't have to worry about social justice mobs boycotting it on kickstarter, but Tabletop publishers do.

The less preparation you star with, the more skill you require. Th...

Right now I'm watching Fairy Tail. At this point, however (around chapt 30), I keep watching it mostly for the humor. I like the world building, but the Japanese cliches are getting more trite, and I find the badass decay they're forcing Erza through distasteful.

I liked NWO, which is to say something given how sick I am of fantasy games. While the chargen engine is a watered down version of the original engine used in Champions, it's still more customization than you'll get on any other fantasy game not named Age of Conan. Gameplay wise it's pretty much 4E ...

The OP may want to revise his definition of MTP because, as far as the consensus here is concerned, it is the OPPOSITE of player empowerment.

As little as I cared for 4E, I think treasure parcels was the best thing it brought along. In murderhobo games, treasure is a part of character advancement as intrinsic as levels, and as proof you have to go no further than stripping a lvl 20 character of all equipment and see how useful the charact...

Plenty of players ignore that the only reason why Record of the Lodoss War was any good was because that campaign ...
