The Den Review/Analysis Threads Thread

Post by Maxus »

This thread is for the collected in-depth Den reviews of published works. Expect a lot of snark and vitriol.

Anatomy of Failed Design dissects the failings of a particular subject and tries to put a finger on Where It Went Wrong, as a lesson in "How Not to Do It".

Old-School Sourcebook Reviews (OSSR) take a gander at the stuff that got published in yesteryear. The tentative benchmark for an OSSR is "10 years" but it varies, really. Stuff that's aged enough and has enough comparisons to give it a gimlet eye.

Drunk Reviews are (usually) for subjects so bad the reviewer has to have a good drink to make the world hurt less. A lot of times, there's overlap

Anatomy of Failed Design

There's also some threads on GNS theory and probably a few things I can't recall at the moment. But this is a start.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Don't forget the D&D Next Playtest Review.
Josh Kablack wrote:Your freedom to make rulings up on the fly is in direct conflict with my freedom to interact with an internally consistent narrative. Your freedom to run/play a game without needing to understand a complex rule system is in direct conflict with my freedom to play a character whose abilities and flaws function as I intended within that ruleset. Your freedom to add and change rules in the middle of the game is in direct conflict with my ability to understand that rules system before I decided whether or not to join your game.

In short, your entire post is dismissive of not merely my intelligence, but my agency. And I don't mean agency as a player within one of your games, I mean my agency as a person. You do not want me to be informed when I make the fundamental decisions of deciding whether to join your game or buying your rules system.

Updated the list. Need to straighten out the format. Starmaker's post kicks the ass of mine.

I did, however, dig up Prak's review of FATAL. I wish I had more time to read it, because I'd forgotten a lot of this stuff.

It just clicked that I've been keeping this reviews thread up for more than a year.

It's fun, and you guys keep me busy. Not to mention all the entertainment I get from reading these.

Keep it up, guys.

I check the Den a couple times a day. As soon as I see a review, it goes in here.

This list is missing virtually all of the old reviews that were done when the books came out.

Josh's Complete Arcane review, that was sort of the template for every single review after it, for example.

My Complete Champions review:
http://tgdmb.com/viewtopic.php?t=19783

Frank's Complete Warrior review:

There's a bunch more that I'm forgetting.

Yes, I'm aware there's a ton I'm missing.

There's a fuckton of stuff that was before my time and I don't have the patience to shuffle through more than twenty backpages at a shot. However, all contributions are welcomed. I can post 'em into the body or you can make you own post, whichever you'd like.
